Lindenwold Police Department Introduces Online Crime Map and Anonymous Crime Tipping Service to Citizens

New technology now allows Lindenwold citizens to take a more proactive approach to local crime fighting through CrimeReports.com and TipSoft

LINDENWOLD, NJ—Nov 22, 2011

The Lindenwold Police Department is pleased to announce that citizens can now gain access to neighborhood level crime incident data in near real time. Through a partnership with CrimeReports, creators of the national crime map at www.crimereports.com, the Lindenwold Police Department is giving Lindenwold citizens free access to the world’s largest online crime map. Together with CrimeReports, citizens are also able to send anonymous tips to law enforcement via text message, iPhone and Android.

“Providing reliable, timely information to our citizens is one of our top priorities,” says Chief Stanley Lemayski. “And partnering with CrimeReports gives us the ability to keep the public informed on a regular basis as to what is going on in the community.” He added that the public can access the crime map through the website or through the CrimeReports iPhone app, which is available for free download in the Apple iTunes store.

The new service even lets local citizens sign up for free customizable email alerts, so they can stay on top of crime in their neighborhood. “Information is power,” Patrol Commander Lt. Michael McCarthy added. “And we hope that giving the community this information will help them understand crime trends and lower crime in their neighborhoods.”

Along with the interactive crime map, citizens also have access to the anonymous tipping platform TipSoft, which is used by more than 700 law enforcement agencies nationwide. The service allows people to anonymously provide tips to law enforcement. When a tip is sent, it is encrypted and routed through secure servers, protecting the personal details of the tip provider. It also allows police to exchange text messages with the tip provider without ever knowing the person’s identity. Text users can send their tip to “CRIMES” (274637) with the keyword LPD.

“The popularity of text messaging has created a significant opportunity for the public to help law enforcement agencies prevent and solve crime,” said Lt. Michael McCarthy. “The ability for any citizen who owns a mobile phone to assist law enforcement is extremely valuable and we are excited to roll this program out to the public.”

“Lindenwold Police Department is demonstrating its leadership in law enforcement by finding new ways to connect with the public at a personal level,” says Greg Whisenant, founder and CEO of CrimeReports. “By offering CrimeReports and TipSoft, they are recognizing the value of the public’s involvement and being proactive in both policing and investing in programs that make a difference.” Both the web-based crime map and crime tip service are designed to be affordable for agencies of all sizes.

You can access the CrimeReports map and learn more about TipSoft at www.crimereports.com.

The Lindenwold Police Department is set to launch a new crime mapping system in the next couple of weeks to replace the Police Blotter. The Lindenwold Police Department has utilized Grant Money to purchase a crime mapping system from CrimeReports.Com. We are excited about our new partnership with CrimeReports.Com. The new crime mapping system will allow our agency to provide the community with up-to-date crime information. Our citizens will be able to access the crime map from any internet connected computer.

We are tentatively scheduled to launch the new crime mapping system on November 24th. In the next couple of weeks we will be providing you with more information regarding the new crime mapping system. This new system will put crime and incident data from our records management system and plot it on a google map so that it can be easily viewed by the public. The map will be updated daily so that our citizens can stay up-to-date about events occurring in their neighborhood.

The new crime mapping system will also allow citizens to submit anonymous tips regarding specific incidents that occurred and sign up for email and text alerts to alert them when a crime is committed in their neighborhood. We look forward to launching the new system and interacting with our residents in an effort to improve the quality of life within our community.

TO REPORT A STREET LIGHT OUTAGE
Street lights provide an important community safety feature. Criminologists and crime prevention experts have long advocated that proper illumination reduces the opportunity for crime. We would like to ask all of our residents to please keep this simple principle in mind. In the event that you notice a street light outage in your neighborhood we would ask you to immediately report it to the electric company who is responsible for maintaining and repairing these lights.
Atlantic City Electric now offers the ability to report street light outage on-line by going to: https://www.atlanticcityelectric.com/home/requests/outage/streetlight/outagereport/default.aspx. If you do not have access to report an outage on-line you can also report it via telephone at 1-800-642-3780. Specific information that you can provide regarding the location, address, pole number will allow for quicker repair time.
In the event of downed street light poles, exposed electrical wires for any other hazardous situation involving the electrical system you can call 1-800-833-7476 to report the problem.
